'Songs' contains poetry that, as the title suggests, resembles songs, with rhythmic variations and musical refrains that accompany an existence populated by both humans and animals. Serious themes like solitude and death maintain their rhythm with light hands on a table somewhere at a station, while bears and wolves, a cat lost from its home, and a rabbit running with a rag in its hand dry the world's tears. The entire volume carries a mystical tone, conveyed through symbols that approach life to explain it. Simultaneously, it is simple, carried by the rhythm of life that explains itself. 'Notes,' on the other hand, reverses the dynamic. Nature's symbols no longer approach life to explain it, but life, in its grief, seeks an explanation outside itself, with the heart turned into a rabbit in the forest. The loss that underpins this collection has a name, Vanessa, but nothing more. The poet, in an interview, shared that when the book was ready for publication, she explicitly forbade the publisher from revealing what had happened to her, fearing the book would become too personal.
